Booty up

Each of my children has loved sleeping with their bottom up in the air. Here are pictures of Charlie and Meg sleeping in the "booty up" position (as we like to call it).

The Toad Prince

On Friday, June 27th, Nana and Grandpa took Jane Gray, cousin Reece, and Charlie to the puppet show, the Toad Prince. The kids had a blast watching the puppets and eating the snacks that Nana smuggled in. After the show, Nana and Grandpa took them to the downtown Jackson fire station where they met a real live fireman and got to stand on the fire truck. We all then met up at Sal and Mookie's and ate pizza and ice cream. Meg wanted to know why she couldn't eat those yummy things, too. One day, Meg, one day soon enough.

Playgroup at the natural science museum

Charlie is in a wonderful playgroup. On Thursday, June 26th, several of his playgroup friends, the Andersons, the Bays, the Hooks, the Balls, and even cousin Laurie went to the natural science museum. The museum has a new dinosaur exhibit that Charlie went crazy over. In fact, he only wanted to see the dinosaurs. He just stood and stared at the T Rex, his favorite.

Charlie's 3rd birthday party

Wednesday, June 25th, Charlie celebrated his third birthday with a "monkey" birthday party. Mommy baked monkey cupcakes, and the kids made monkey facemasks and got to take turns hitting a monkey pinata. The kids also enjoyed jumping on the jumpy land and playing on Charlie's swingset and fort. Charlie wore a monkey shirt and shorts that Mommy made for him, and his sisters donned matching pink monkey dresses. So many of Charlie's friends (including his best buds from school, Henry and Victor) and cousins came to help him celebrate his day. Charlie had a wonderful birthday!

Barbour's bombers

On Tuesday, June 24th (the night before Charlie's birthday party!!), the Barbour's Bombers, Daddy's softball team, played for the league championship. The children and Bo Barbour, Austin's son, cheered the team to victory. It's a family tradition to run the bases after a victory. Here is Jane Gray running her victory lap. The last picture is of the team with the trophy.

Springfield trip

Charles had a CLE/conference in Springfield, Missouri, this year, so he decided that he would take the family and turn it into a vacation. While Charles was in his classes, the kids and I explored Springfield. The first day, Thursday, June 19th, we went on an animal safari. I drove the kids through the park and rolled the windows down so that they could feed the animals. The first animal we saw was this ostrich. The kids were so scared that they crouched down in the front seat so that the ostrich wouldn't see them. This first picture is of the ostrich looking into the car at Charlie on the floorboard of the front seat. By the end of the safari, Charlie and Jane Gray were feeding the animals out of their hand, even the ostrich. Charlie's favorite animals were the bulls; Jane Gray liked the deer and emus. Thursday afternoon, we went to the Bass Pro shop and saw lots of fish, turtles, and snakes. We even got to see the fish being fed by a diver. The next day, I took the kids to the Discovery Museum. We had so much fun that the kids didn't want to leave. Mommy, however, was exhausted, and, after lunch with Daddy, we crashed at the hotel for naps. We left early the next morning so that Mommy and Daddy could be back home in time to attend "An Evening with the Mannings". Thanks for the tickets, Aunt Nicki!

Summer reading program at the Willie Morris library

This summer, Charlie and Jane Gray signed up for the summer reading program at the Willie Morris library. Jane Gray loves to read, so we go to the library often to check out books. She even has her own library card. As part of the program, we have listened to Mrs. Tohill (Jane Gray's Bible teacher at church) read books to us, and Jane Gray and Charlie even got to ride in the Metro One helicopter.

Jane Gray's ballet recital

Jane Gray and her cousins, Liddy and Mary Clinton, took ballet at their school, Covenant, this year. The girls had so much fun! In fact, their teacher told me that this year, she taught them the "Monkey Dance." She said she doesn't teach it every year, but every other year or so, there is a class that she feels is particularly suited to the "Monkey Dance." Care to guess why? These pictures give it away.

Stowe family vacation

This was not our best trip. We arrived in Orange Beach on Saturday, May 24th. That night, as we were hunting for sanddollars, Charles and Charlie got stung by jellyfish. Charles ended up having to go to the doctor to get a tetanus shot. I asked him to take Meg with him because she had a bad cough (she had already been to the doctor in Jackson and gotten an antibiotic, but she wasn't getting any better). The doctor suspected RSV, so Charles and Meg were sent to the emergency room. Six hours later, Meg was diagnosed with RSV. Little Ella was starting to cough, too, so Tony and Stacy decided that they needed to take her to her pediatrician in Charlotte. And, we really didn't want to get anyone else sick, so the Eisenhauers and Barbours left early on Wednesday, three days sooner than planned. Thankfully, everyone healed, but we were sad that we had to miss out on three more days of beach fun.

Meg's baptism

Meg and cousin Laurie were baptized on May 18th. Meg, you performed beautifully. You were awake and grinned from ear to ear at Dr. Duncan when he anointed your head with water. Uncle Paul and Aunt Fair had a baptism lunch for Meg and Laurie at their house afterwards. The food was delicious, and the fellowship was so fun!

Last day of school

May 15th was Jane Gray and Charlie's last day of school. They love Covenant, especially their teachers, Mrs. Chance (Jane Gray) and Mrs. Hight and McBride (Charlie). It's been a great school year!

10th anniversary trip to Chicago

For our 10th anniversary, Charles and I (and Meg) went to Chicago. We had a fun-filled weekend; we went to a Cubs game and the art museum, we rode the El, we ate pizza at Pizza Duo, we took an architectural cruise, we had cocktails at the top of the Hancock building, we rode the ferris wheel at Navy Pier, we went shopping on Michigan Avenue (bought Jane Gray's first American girl doll, Felicity), and we had tea at the Drake. Whew - we did a lot and had so much fun. Jane Gray and Charlie, we promise to take you with us the next time we go.

Charlie's tea party

For Mother's Day, Charlie's class at Covenant had a tea party and recital. Nana went with us. Charlie's teacher told me that he was the best singer in his class, but he got a little stagefright on the day of the big performance. He did well, but he didn't sing as loudly as he could. I think he was just so tickled to see Nana in the audience.

Fun at Louise

The Barbour men have purchased some hunting land in Louise. The children love to go with Daddy to "work" at Louise. Here is a cute picture of Jane Gray and Charles admiring a crawdad that Daddy found in one of the duck ponds.

Meg's first trip to Oxford

Meg, you will learn pretty quickly that we love to spend time in Oxford. Mommy and Daddy met and fell in love there, and we lived our first married years there, so we have lots of fond memories of Oxford. Your first real trip to Oxford was on April 25th (we went another time when Daddy had a hearing there, but it was too cold to do much sightseeing). We ate at Ajax's, shopped on the Square, and went to an Ole Miss baseball game - it was a perfect day!

Frog and Toad

On Tuesday, April 22, Charles took Jane Gray and Liddy to see Frog and Toad at Thalia Mara Hall. The girls (and Daddy) loved it!

Ella's baptism

Ella was born on February 17th, almost three weeks after Meg, but she was the first to be baptized. The whole Barbour crew drove up to Charlotte for the big event. It was the first time that Meg and Ella met; and, as you can tell from the picture, Ella was overcome with excitement. It was a big weekend for Ella, and she performed beautifully. I was honored to be named Ella's godmother, and I plan to fulfill my duties as best I can. We love you, Ella!

Swimming lessons with Lu Lee

During the first two weeks of April, Jane Gray and Charlie took swimming lessons from Lu Lee. Since last summer, Jane Gray has been begging to go back to Mrs. Lu's. Charlie loves Mrs. Lu, too. Both Jane Gray and Charlie learned much from Mrs. Lu about how to brush their hair with their arms while they are swimming, how to make popcorn with their feet, and how to swim to the side if they get into trouble. Thanks to Mrs. Lu, I now have two little fishies (or as Jane Gray and Charlie say, a mermaid and a shark!).

Fishing with Gigi

March 29th, we took Gigi fishing in Yazoo City. Charles bought 100 crickets, and Gigi went through them all. The fish were biting thanks to Pop's feeding machine, so everyone had a blast!

Easter

Easter was on March 23rd. The Easter bunny left you lots of goodies in your baskets. We took you to church in your matching Easter outfits, and then we had lunch and an Easter egg hunt at Nana and Grandpa's house. Gigi was there, and Jane Gray found a special egg hidden in Gigi's dress sleeve.
